Compact Flash memory cards
Developed by SanDisk in 1994, Compact Flash are far more complex in design than the older Smart Media cards. Compact Flash cards consist of an encased miniature circuit board with multiple Flash memory chips alongside a dedicated controller chip which improves performance.
Compact Flash comes in two sizes. Type I are 3.3 mm thick, Type II are 5.5 mm thick. Both support dual voltage. They are available in sizes from 1Gb all the way up to a massive 32Gb. 64Gb Compact Flash have already been developed and will be available soon and its likely that Compact Flash cards with over 100 Gb storage are just round the corner.
Compact Flash have proved an incredibly versatile form of data storage. In terms of consumer products they are used in just about everything from computers to cameras, and PDAs to Pocket PCs. And though you may not be buying them for these purposes yourself, they can be found in helicopters, bombers, trains, defibrillators and slot machines.
Compact Flash are regarded as both extremely durable and reliable. According to the Compact Flash Association Compact Flash cards have an operating temperature between -40 C and 85 C and an operating shock rating of 2000Gs, equivalent to a ten foot drop. Data on a Compact Flash card is protected by 'built-in dynamic defect management and error correction technologies' - apparently they can be used for a 100 years with no loss of data!
