A memory card reader is a device for reading the contents of flash memory cards such as CompactFlash, SecureDigital and MultiMediaCards. Some memory card readers can read only one single type of media, while others - multicard readers - can read almost every type. They are usually run through a USB interface which can connect directly to your PC or laptop through the USB port. This can, for example, save you having to connect your camera or mobile phone directly to your computer - instead the memory card can be removed and read separately.

Most memory card readers also have the capability to write data as well as read - this offers the chance to turn any memory card into a data storage device separate from its primary purpose in your camera, cell phone or game console.
