As well as making a large range of consumer cameras, Olympus created and manufacture the xD-Picture Card Flash Memory Format. xD stands for Extreme Digital and there are three different types of xD-Picture Cards available. S (standard), M (multilevel) and H (High Speed). The Standard xD-Picture Cards are older, only available in sizes up to 512 Mb and therefore have mostly been replaced. The Multilevel xD-Picture Cards are available in up to 8Gb, but are slightly slower, while the High Speed cards, with capacities up to 2Gb, have the read and write speeds required by video capturing at high resolution. The xD-Picture Card format is also manufactured by other companies including Kodak and Sandisk.
