RAM is the most common form of computer memory. RAM stands for Random Access Memory, so called because its built using integrated circuits which allow any memory cell to be directly accessed. This means that any piece of data to be returned in a constant time, regardless of its relation to the previously accessed data. Older storage mechanisms, for example tape, instead requires actual physical movement of the reading instrument so the time to retrieve a piece of data depends on the physical location of the last data accessed.

There are several types of RAM memory, so if you're planning to upgrade your computer, make sure you get the right specification and ensure that your computer has the capability of being upgraded in the first place. Each type of RAM memory comes with different speeds, numbers of pins and density. We suggest you use the online system scanner or memory advisor tools provided by RAM suppliers like Crucial. These tools make a difficult task very simple indeed. Just follow the instructions and they'll tell you what RAM memory your computer uses and how much more you can install.
