SD memory cards
MiniSD | MicroSD | TransFlash | SDHC
SD memory cards are postage stamp-sized flash memory units that weigh in at about 2 grams. They were developed by the combined efforts of SanDisk, Toshiba and Matsushita and hit the marketplace in 2001.
Their range of applications has expanded continuously and now includes almost the whole spectrum of digital equipment; phones, handheld PCs, digital music players, cameras and camcorders and even car navigation systems and electronic books.
Their popularity has soared as their capacity has grown - from just a few Mbs up to 2Gb. SDHC (high capacity) cards have taken the capacity up to 16Gb and this trend in capacity-growth will likely continue.
So what's made SD memory cards so popular? Apart from the fact that they're cheap, they are a very convenient size, they have high storage capacity and an efficient transfer rate allowing fast data transfer. Because they are based on flash technology they are solid-state - so there are no moving parts. This is turn reduces the use and need for battery power. In small electronic devices this can really help with battery life.
Perhaps more importantly for the more clumsy amongst us, having no moving parts means they're far harder to break. According to the manufacturer a SD memory card can withstand a shock of 2000 Gs, which sounds impressive. Basically it means you can drop it from head height and it should survive the fall, but standing on a SD memory card probably isn't a good idea.
SD memory cards are also available in Micro and Mini format. Both of these are even smaller than the standard SD cards (the Micro being the smaller of the two) and are usually sold with an adapter allowing them to be used in any device which takes SD cards. They are not however compatible with each other - miniSD cards cannot be used in microSD devices. Also be aware that many older SD applications are not compatible with the newer SDHC (high capacity) cards. We strongly advise you to check your equipment's documentation before buying an SD memory card above 2Gb to make sure it will work.
