XD memory cards
XD memory cards - officially called xD-Picture Cards - were created by Olympus and Fujifilm and first sold in 2002. XD stands for Extreme Digital. This XD memory cards format is now made by other manufacturers including Kodak and Sandisk and is mainly used in digital cameras.
There are three types of xD-Picture cards:
- Type S - Standard. This is the original xD-Picture card. They are only available in sizes up to 512Mb, so they're gradually being replaced by the other two types below.
- Type M - MultiLevel Cell. This type has a maximum size of 8Gb, though they are slightly slower.
- Type H - High Speed. Type H have very high read speeds (approx 5Mb/s) and a maximum size of 2Gb. Many of the newer cameras require Type H xD-Picture cards to capture video at the highest possible resolution.
Available: 64Mb, 128Mb, 256Mb, 512Mb, 1Gb, 2Gb, 4Gb and 8Gb
