Scoring

An individual piece of film music, from beginning to end, which may be seconds or minutes long. A film score consists of may cues.

Cue

The obvious musical mimicking of on-screen action. Often used as derogatory term due to its association with cartoon music.

Mickey Mousing

A “clash” or strident/tense sound created by the combination of pitches. The augmented 4th & minor 2nd are often used to create this.

Dissonance

Indicates the volume at which the music should be performed. Forte is loud, Piano is quiet. These dynamics can have varying degrees. Crescendo is gradually getting louder. Decrescendo is gradually getting quieter.

Dynamics

The formal structure in which a new or previously composed piece of music in its entirety bay be placed. Includes alterations in harmony, rhythm, tempo, instrumentation. Etc. Think of a jazz artist playing an instrumental version of “Rock with you” by MJ.

Arrangement

A technique is which a leitmotif or theme is modified rhythmically, harmonically, texturally, dynamically or directionally, all while maintaining its fundamental melodic content. Deals with small cells of melody, not complete composition , which can be arranged.

Thematic Transformation

The person that oversees the financial and organizational aspects of the film.

The Producer

The creative leader of the film. The person in charge of “the look” of the film, sets, camera, costume, actors.

Watching the film and deciding where the music will go and what it will sound like. This is done in a spotting session, attended by film composer, the director and others such as the music editor.

Spotting

The person responsible for making spotting notes from the spotting session, called detailed timing notes for the composer, and preparing the film for synchronization with the recorded track.

Music Editor

A generalized description of where the music begins and ends for each cue.

Music Spotting Notes

Sometimes called cue sheets, are extremely detailed descriptions of every shot, cut and line of dialog in a scene, with timing to 1/100th of a sec. The composer uses these notes to find exact moments to sync the music with the film and appropriate tempos and cues.
