Located in back portion of the brain, processes & interprets visual information

Located lower middle (under parental lobe) responsible for understanding speech
Temporal lobe
Located in left hemisphere in the frontal lobe and is responsible for pronunciation & grammar
Broca's area
Located in the back of temporal lobe near occipital lobe of the left cerebral hemisphere responsible for understanding words and comprehension
Wernicke's Area
Broken speech or writing but able to understand speech and writing
Broca's aphasia
Able to use fluent grammar but words are scrambled in spoken or written words
Wernicke's aphasia
impaired ability to learn to read

Feeling skull for different strengths and weaknesses

Located in the middle of the brain and is associated with fighting, feeding, fleeing and reproductive behavior
Midbrain/limbic system
Located in center of the brain. Relay center for the senses and passes along to cerebral cortex
Thalamus
Below thalamus. Responsible for controlling hunger, thirst, emotions, body temperature regulations and circadian rhythms
Hypothalamus
Connected to hypothalamus. Produces and releases hormones
Pituary gland
Greek for seahorse. Bends around temporal lobe. Learning, formation and creation of memories
Hippocampus
Almond shape near end of hippocampus. Responsible for anger, fear, and sadness, controls aggression. Detects fear and prepares for emergency events. Triggers fight or flight response.
Amygdala
Important for bodily activities essential to survival such as changes in heartbeat and breathing, focusing of attention and patterns of arousal (sleeping versus walking)
The brainstem or hindbrain
Responsible for sleep, wakefulness, attention and arousal
Pons
Responsible for breathing, heartbeat
Medulla
Neural network located in the medulla that helps control functions such as sleep and attention
Reticular formation
(Little brain) Located near rear of brain stem. Helps coordinate voluntary movements and balance. Also plays a role in the formation of procedural memories (Ex. Riding a bike)
Cerebellum
Chemical messengers that carry, boost, and balance signals between neurons. Affect physical & psychological functions, heart rate, sleep, appetite, mood, and fear. Manages everything from breathing, heartbeat, learning and concentration levels
