SKIN | The outer protective layer of the body |
What does the skin protect? | It protects the interior from dehydration, microorganisms, abrasions and radiation. |
SKELETAL SYSTEM | Comprises of the bones and cartilage of the body. |
What does the skeletal system provide? | It provides rigidity to the body, support for soft internal organs, attachments for skeletal muscles, reservoirs for calcium and fat storage, and a site for blood-cell production. |
NERVOUS SYSTEM | Processes information about the environment, the body’s interior, it initiates movement of the limbs and changes in the body. |
What is the Nervous System comprised of? | The brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and ganglia. |
LYMPHATIC SYSTEM | Comprises a series of delicate channels that drain tissue fluid through lymph nodes. |
What does the Lymphatic System contain? | It contains lymphocytes and macrophages to sweep up foreign proteins, microbes, and cancer cells. |
MUSCULAR SYSTEM | It brings about body movement, includes the voluntary muscles of the body. Muscle fibers attach eiter to a bone by a tendon, or to the skin, as is the case with fascial muscles. |
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM | Consists of the heart to pump blood and the arteries, arterides, capillaries, venules and veins to carry blood. |
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM | Extends from the mouth to the anus and has associated glands. |
What are the associated glands to the Digestive System? | Salivary, exocrine pancreas, and liver. |
What does the Digestive System concentrate on? | Ingestion, digestion, absorption of food and water, and excretion of residual waste. |
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM | Concerned primarily with bringing air into the body for exchange between the air sacs and blood. |
What does the Respiratory System comprise of? | The nose, larynx, airways and lungs. |
URINARY SYSTEM | Primarily concerned with excretion of nitrogenous waste (urea in urine) but is also important for control of the pH and ionic concentrations of the blood. |
What is the Urinary System comprised of? | The kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra. |
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM | Made up of a series of glands that maintain homeostasis. |
What is homeostasis? | The relatively constant internal state of the body. |
What else does the Endocrine System include? | The pituitary, thyroid, adrenal and endocrine pancreas glands. |
REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM | The male and female reproductive systems are concerned with the production and nurturing of the next generation. |
What does the Reproductive System include? | Gonads- which produce sex cells, as well as associated glands – erectile tissue, the uterus and breasts. |
