Questions and Answers List
level questions: Stages of Team Development
Question
Answer
Questioning phase and processes are often ignored as members explore and test the tolerance of the system and leader
Forming
Members start asserting themselves as they vie for position. People try and reach agreement on objectives and strategy and this is where conflict can develop. Leader may get challenged on issues and their handling of the relationships will often set the tone for future decision-making
Storming
Stage where consensus is reached and roles and responsibilities become clear and are accepted. There will still be arguing, but people listen more and there is open exchange of ideas. Big decisions are made by the group as a whole, while smaller decisions can be delegated to individuals and smaller groups
Norming
High productivity stage where team identity exists and the team is focused in achieving its goals. Energy gets directed towards task and project completion and the leader plays much more of a delegating and overseeing role
Performing
Add-on phase for project-specific groups that form for shorter periods of time. When a group has specifically complete its task, it disbands and then members move on to other projects
