level questions: Electron Energy Levels

QuestionAnswer
What is an Energy Level?-This is simply a Shell, that is a Distance away from the Nucleus
How can the Electrons move up and down the Energy Levels?-The Electrons can move up One of More Energy Levels IF it Absorbs the Right Amount of EM Radiation [Energy] -The Electron can also Fall Back to its Energy Level it started with, which can result in Energy being Transferred Away [Same Amount that it Absorbed]
How can an Atom be Ionised due to Energy Absorption?-If an Outer Electron gains enough Energy, it can Move So Far that it just Leaves the Atom, making it a Free Electron -This makes the Atom now a Positive Ion, due to the Imbalance of Protons to Electrons
Which, out of Alpha, Beta and Gamma, is the most Ionising?-Alpha has the Highest Ionisation Power, meaning it can't Travel very Far without Hitting an Electron and Ionising it therefore
What do Florescent Tubes do to make Light?-Fluorescent Tubes contain Mercury Vapour -Electrons are Accelerated through the Vapour, which Ionises some of the Mercury Atoms making more Free Electrons -When the Free Electrons Collide with Electrons in Mercury Atoms, it gets Excited to Higher Energy Levels -When they decide to drop Down, it emits UV Radiation -Then there is a Compound called Phosphor which simply Absorbs it, Has its Electrons become Excited, which will then therefore emit Visible Light in the EM Spectrum
