Describe the Distribution of the Ice Cover in the UK, 20,000 Years Ago? | -All of Scotland, Isle of Mann and Ireland was Covered in Ice
-All but the Land boarding the Bristol Channel in Wales was covered by Ice
-Most of North England covered in Ice |
What is an Arete? | -This is simply a very Narrow, Steep-Sided Ridge
-Formed when 2 Glaciers flow in Parallel Valleys, which will Sharpen the Ridge due to Erosion Processes
-Example may be in Striding Edge, Lake District |
What is a Corrie? [Cirques] | -This had its Life begin as a Hollow with a Small Glacier
-Because of Rotational Slip, it then becomes a Steep-Sided Armchair shape, that has a sort of Lip in the Bottom End
-A Tarn can often be left there, which is simply a Lake. That's it
-Example may be Red Tarn, Lake District |
What are Ribbon Lakes? | -This is simply a Long Thing LAKE
-Formed when the Glacier retreats up, and also in Hollows where the Softer Rock has been Eroded More
-Example may be Windermere, Lake District |
What is a Pyramidal Peak? | -This is simply a Mountain Peak with it having 3+ Sides.
-Formed when 3 Glaciers, or More, back to back, Erode a Mountain
-Example may be Snowdon, Snowdonia |
What are Truncated Spurs? | -This is simply Cliff-Like Edges that is on the Valley
-Formed when Ridges of Land, a Spur, that Sticks out into the Main Valley, and is then Cut Off as the Glacier moves Past. |
What are Hanging Valleys? | -Small Tributary Glaciers that simply Connect with the Main Glacier; this is a Hanging Valley
-They are seen at a High Level, due to Larger Glacier eroding more Deeply, which when Melts leaves it Up There |
What are Glacial Troughs? | -This is simply a Valley that has very Steep Sides with Flat Floors - like a U Shaped Valley
-This is simply due to the Glacier Eroding making it more Deeper and Wider
-Example may be Nant Ffrancon, Snowdonia |
What is Lateral Moraine? | -This is a Mound of Material that has been Deposited on where the Side of the Glacier used to sit
-This Material is mainly Displaced from the Valley Walls, and then simply was Carried at the Side |
What is Medial Moraine? | -This is simply Material that is Deposited on the Central Line of where the Glacier once stood
-If 2 Glaciers do Meet, then the Lateral Moraine from the Edges that are Joining up will become the Medial Moraine for the New Bigger Glacier |
What is Terminal Moraine? | -This is simply Material that is found at the Snout [Front] of a Glacier
-This is used for a Marker for where the Ice had Reached, in which the Material there has been Plucked and Abraded has been Dropped as Semi-circular Mounds, when the Ice Retreats |
What is Ground Moraine? | -This simply is Material that is Dragged along the Base of the Glacier
-Material here, is dropped over a Large Area on the Valley Floor |
What are Drumlins? | -This is simply a Hill that is Unbalanced in its Steepness
-It is Formed [Not Always] when either the Glacier is Overloaded or Melted and is therefore Depositing Material, which ill then make a Hill
-As the Ice Flows over the Hill, the Shape of the Hill also will Change, making it more Steep in Upper Course of the Glacier, and then more Sloppy in the Lower Course of the Glacier
-Example may be in Wisconsin USA |
What are Erratic's? | -This is simply a Rock that has been Carried by the Glacier and been Dropped in an Area which has a Completely Different Rock Type.
-Just Rocks out of Place, that's it |
