3 Classifications of Signs | Ground sign, pole sign, wall sign |
Permanent signs are: | Set on own foundation, sunk into the ground, permanently fastened to, painted on a permanent structure, require a permit. |
Temporary signs are: | sandwhich boards, paper signs in store window, banners, stretched across the front of the store or placed on small trailers, are easily moved and inexpensive |
Pole sign | sign supported by 1+ pole and separated from the ground by air. Separated from the building or other structures |
Ground signs (low profile) | entire bottom is in contact with or in close proximity from the ground. They are separate from the building. |
Wall signs | painted on or flush with the wall of a building. |
Roof signs | Freestanding sign on a rooftop or anything that extends above the top of the highest wall that does not project horizontally |
Canopy & Awnings | signs & traditional canvas awning signs on canvas / signs on a canopy & translucent plastic canopies that have letters/logos on a lighted background |
Projecting sign | Sign installed perpendicular to /at an angle from a bldg wall. Local regulations require clearance requirements and that the owner have insurance |
Suspended signs | sign hanging down from porch/other structural element that would exist without the sign. Often duplicate the address/nameplates and overhang a public sideawlk - which requires clearance and insurance |
Marquee signs | Manually changeable text/images with large display (like gas station price signs) |
Window/door signs | permanently painted o paper signs |
Billboard | sign located on a zone lot not containing a bldg and in the ordinance includes sign size limitation pertaining to building floor area |
Parked vehicle with message | Parked veh with signs on them in front of the business. |
animated & flashing signs | regulations limit/prohibit the movement of these signs - include time and temperature/beacons/ electronic marquees that change graphics constantly |
Flags | fabric, banner containing colors, patterns, symbols used to symbol a govt, or political subdivision |
Banners | lightweight fabric/similar that is permanently mounted to a pole or building by frame on 1 or more edges. are easily moved and inexpensive. |
Penant | lightweight plastic, etc suspended by rope, wire or string designed to move in the wind. |
Construction signs | ID contractor, engineer, bank involved in the construction process |
Signs that require permits | 1. Freestanding sign 2. Wall sign 3. Roof sign 4 Canopy & awning sign 5. Projecting sign 6. Suspended sign |
Signs that don't require permits | 1. Real estate, finance, construction 2. Directional Traffic control signs 3. political signs |
Removal of signs | Citys may require abandoned signs to be removed in a certain timeframe (30 days) All damaged/unsafe signs must also be removed within a certain period of time. |
