How does the mitochondria act in the oxidation manner when in anaerobic medium?

Cell respiration is replaced by fermentation of organic compounds (because electrons cannot be accepted by the O2 which is absent.) which produces incomplete oxidized compounds (lactic acid, ethanol...)
