Epidermis is usually one layer thick but may be thicker in plants living in dry habitats, epidermal cells are variable and irregular in shape. interlock tightly like puzzle pieces with no intercellular space (to be a good barrier) They are living cells and generally have a large vacuole and only a thin layer of cytoplasm, lack chloroplast except aquatic plants often their upper and side walls are thicker than inner ones.
