Amniotic fluid is colourless, viscous and slightly alkaline; it consists of water (99 %) and small amounts of albumin, glucose and creatinine. It also contains some mucus, pieces of the thick epidermis which is sloughed from the fetal hooves, and traces of kidney and intestinal excreta (urea and meconium respectively).
