By observation of the typical appearnce of Yersinia Pestis, (bipolar-staining bacilli that resemble safety pins) in gram stained or wwright gernsa-stained sputum, cerebrospinal fluid, or material aspirated from a bubo. Diagnosis can also be made by culture. Molecular based methods.
