-Weak opiate -Codeine is a prodrug- tkaing any enzyme inhibitors can make them side side effects without any analgesic effect -Constipation, drowsiness, sedation (all enhanced in elderly) -Risk of tolerance & dependence -it is a sub-therapeutic dose- codeine doesnt have its full analgesic effect but will have all of its side effects & can increase risk of tolerance/ dependence
