Arising above the UES (weak area ) Symptoms: dysphagia, halitosis, undigested food regurgitation, nocturnal aspiration, and recurrent aspiration pneumonia Diagnosis: • History and physical examination: raise the suspicion for Zenker diverticulum • Esophagram: Using water-soluble contrast can provide the diagnosis Treatment: • Cricopharyngeal myotomy: through a neck incision • Endoscopic stapler: This alternative to open surgery divides the diverticulum wall. • Diverticulopexy: Large diverticula may require myotomy combined with suspension of the diverticulum to prevent foodstuff from entering the residual sac
