Answer:

Pyogenic: Ultrasound or CT-guided percutaneous drainage with IV antibiotics; operative drainage indicated if percutaneous attempts fail or cysts are multiple or loculated. Amebic: Operative drainage not indicated unless abscesses do not resolve with IV metronidazole or are superinfected with bacteria. PROGNOSIS Mortality is low for uncomplicated abscesses, but complicated abscesses carry a 40% mortality risk
