DEFINITION Portal pressure > 10 mm Hg (measure with indirect hepatic vein wedge pressure). CAUSES Prehepatic: Congenital atresia, cyanosis, or portal vein thrombosis. Intrahepatic: Cirrhosis, hepatic fibrosis from hemochromatosis, Wilson’s disease, or congenital fibrosis. Posthepatic: Budd–Chiari syndrome (thrombosis of the hepatic veins), hypercoagulable state, lymphoreticular malignancy
