The GATT is a legal agreement between many countries, whose overall purpose was to promote international trade by reducing or eliminating trade barriers such as tariffs and quotas. Was signed in 1947, two years after the end of WWII in hopes of creating a more globalized world. Remained in effect until the establishment of the WTO.
