Liver disease is the most common medical complication of chronic alcohol abuse. Progressive loss of liver function occurs with reversible fatty liver progressing to irreversible hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver failure. Hepatic dysfunction is often more severe in women than in men and in both men and women infected with hepatitis B or C virus.
