2. Alcohol withdrawal syndrome

In individuals physically dependent on ethanol, discontinuance can lead to a withdrawal syndrome characterized by insomnia, tremor, anxiety, and, in severe cases, life-threatening seizures and delirium tremens (DTs). Peripheral effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and arrhythmias.
