Why are genes switched on and off in different tissues?

Answer:

Some are always on, known as housekeeping genes (genes encoding enzymes for glucose metabolism or protein synthesis) Other genes are only switched on in cells where needed eg. muscle myosin genes, B-lymphocytes in immune system.
